The blog

My blog contains cool stuff from some of my pretend internet friends along with an occasional personal post.

My portfolio

I do design and web development for fun and profit. I'm a geek who enjoys people. I'm a designer who can read and write code. Here are some samples of my work.

Computer problems in real life...

Brilliance from the comedy troupe Awkward Spaceship.

A duet with Siri

Songwriter Jonathan Mann and iPhone personal assistant Siri team up for a very special duet.

A magazine is an iPad that does not work

There's a dent in the universe.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Really.

It's a phrase that designers know well. And now we have video evidence of such an incident actually occurring.

For non-designers, "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is a pangram, a phrase containing every letter of the alphabet. It's been used since the 19th century to test typefaces, improve penmanship, and learn the alphabet.

Let's end unboxing videos

"Remember. Only you can prevent unboxing videos."

Esther and Bruce try out their webcam

After Esther and Bruce Huffman inadvertently recorded their struggle to take a snapshot on their new computer, their granddaughter posted the video on YouTube.

It's been viewed by millions and the couple has even appeared on Good Morning America.

iWhale

The most creative use iChat balloons you'll see all day. Ranks right up there with an upside down "01134" on a calculator.

Steve Jobs tribute rap

Yes, it crosses the fanboy line, but I have to say, this is very amusing.

Windows XP is getting old

According to The Next Web the original Windows XP wallpaper, titled "Bliss", was taken in Sonoma County, CA in 1996.

The second photo was taken 10 years later from the same spot.

Modern love

Depending on your point of view, this will either affirm or destroy your faith in humanity.

Visions of students

While looking into some interactive web video options for a client, I came across this cool little presentation.

It was made using the very cool HTML5 video tool, popcorn.js.

Everyone knows what I did last summer

A great New Yorker cartoon.

Should I work free?

A handy flow chart by Jessica Hische.

Pitchography

Question: How long would it take to build a tool that could make presentations that looked better than those made using Powerpoint? Answer: About 48 hours. Pitchography is my favorite entry in the Knockout competition.

Of course, if you want something more powerful and non-Powerpointy (ugly and predictable) there's Prezi.

Two bots chat

I could watch these two go at it all day.

Smarties at the Cornell Creative Machines Lab posted this video of two "cleverbots" speaking to each other. (Cleverbot is an AI web application that learns how to mimic human conversations by communicating with humans.)

Copying the Apple "Exporience"

When photos of counterfeit Apple retail stores throughout China began surfacing a couple of weeks ago, it was impressive to see the rigorous attention detail that must have gone into so faithfully copying an Apple store.

Now, we see that at least one of the knock-off stores wasn't as meticulous.

How standards proliferate

Ever wish there was just one way to charge a phone or share a file? Me too. That's the problem.

When Allen met Steve

This is a very cool photo essay of one kid's encounter with Steve Jobs.
